Our PSHE / RHE curriculum is planned and delivered to enable our young people to be:
- Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
- Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
- Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society
It is the intention of Selwyn Primary School to teach high quality, age appropriate, pupil-sensitive, evidence-based PSHE, that demonstrates a respect for the law and all communities that call Newham home.
It is expected that PSHE in Selwyn Primary School will help pupils to learn about themselves and the world they live in, giving them the skills, understanding and information they need for life in 21st century Britain. The aim is to enable them to embrace diversity, help them to make the most of technology and understand and develop the skills needed to develop healthy and strong relationships.
Topics covered in our curriculum
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) is woven into our daily school life. Through our curriculum, assemblies, themed days and weeks and our school 5Cs.
Individual lessons are taught weekly and learning is focused on key topics across the school. Teachers model the skills of emotional literacy and demonstrate principled, open-minded views. Effective questioning by teachers continually supports the development of opinions and self-esteem, in a safe and supportive environment.
By the end of each key stage, our aim is that students are active learners who are able to express themselves and accept difference in their community and the wider world. Promoting citizenship through PSHE enables children to make a positive contribution by developing the knowledge and experience needed to claim their rights and understand their responsibilities. It prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of adult and working life.
