Computing at Selwyn
Curriculum intent
At Selwyn Primary School, our aim is to develop a Computing curriculum that is stimulating, ambitious and rigorous; enabling children to think logically, flexibly and creatively to solve problems; developing their resilience and confidence in their computing ability to allow them to become active participants in a digital world.
The computing curriculum is designed to teach children how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; to recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour and identify a range of ways to report concerns about online content and contact. We want to ensure that the children are digitally literate – able to independently express themselves and develop their ideas and curiosity through information and communication technology. We teach the principles of information technology and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
Through embedding computing links within all areas of the National Curriculum throughout Selwyn, we enable children to confidently apply their knowledge and skills across the wider curriculum.
Curriculum implementation
EYFS computing is incorporated into daily planning and is imaginative, requires collaboration and sharing, involves listening, understanding, following and giving instructions, involves problem solving and includes lots of ‘unplugged’ activities: computing without computers.
- Computing lessons are taught once a week in years 1-6.
- Online Safety lessons to be taught at the beginning of each half term.
- Safer Internet Day to be celebrated each year.
- Unplugged computing activities are incorporated into KS1 and KS2 planning to gain better understanding of skills and concepts to be later used in programming.
