Student Leadership
At Selwyn Primary School, we are proud to be a school where children learn, develop and grow. By the time they reach Year 6, they are ready to put themselves forward to take a more active role in school life through our student leadership structures and processes. Key structures are our school House Captains and our school council.
School Council & Eco-Committee: giving each classroom a voice
Our School Council & Eco Committee comprises of children from every class across the school from Year 1 – Year 6 and a representative from LSP. They are led by Mrs B who meets with the children every fortnight.
The School Council & Eco-Committee group is decided via an election process in each class. At the beginning of the school year, children have the opportunity to deliver a speech detailing why they will be a good representative for their class. The children then vote and the two children with the most votes are elected as their class’s school councillors or Eco-Committee members
School Council
The children meet to discuss upcoming whole school events and issues that may arise in and around the school. The school council uses this time to voice any questions that their classes or year groups have around a range of topics and feedback on the areas they have been assigned to focus on.
Eco-Committee
The children work together on projects to improve our school’s sustainability and our outside environment. This may involve organising litter picking sessions; a recycling-drive or gathering data for Transport for London about how children come to school each day.
Sports Leaders & House captains: opportunities for whole school responsibility
Being chosen as a House Captain in Year 6 at Selwyn, is now one of the school’s most prestigious student leadership roles. House Captains are carefully selected to represent both their House and the school, and are expected to be excellent role models and leaders.
Their appointment recognises the consistently positive attitude, commitment, and application they have demonstrated throughout their time at Selwyn.
